ļ»æWhether you're just starting your journey or you've been performing for years, getting into your dream drama college isn't easy. There is no guaranteed way to get in, but here are 5 tips that may be helpful.
1: Know the Basics
It's important you have a basic understanding of how things work. Take some classes in school or your local theatre group to develop your skills and get experience performing. If it's financially possible, take dance classes and singing lessons to improve your singing and movement abilities.
Take every opportunity to perform and learn from others. Attend workshops and classes, and seek feedback from teachers and your friends. By doing this, you'll develop the skills and confidence you need to succeed in theatre school.
2: Research and select the right schools:
Look for drama colleges that have a good reputation, and a team of experienced teachers, and look into the programs that they offer to make sure they're the perfect fit for you. You should also consider factors such as location, and cost, and if you can visit the campus you should. When you find the right school, it will feel like home.
3: Over Prepare your Audition Material:
You'll need to audition for most drama colleges as part of the application process. You'll need a monologue and a song, and for some, you'll need a dance routine that showcases your strengths as a performer. Practice with friends or a teacher and get as much feedback as you can.
Drama college auditions are nerve-wracking, so learn your audition material inside and out so you don't have to worry about remembering lines or lyrics. That way you can focus more on being present and responding to what's happening around your.
4: Don't try and be something you're not
The audition panel desperately wants you to be what they're looking for. They're not there to make you feel bad, they want you to do well. It's impossible to guess what the panel is looking for, in fact, sometimes the panel doesn't know what they're looking for
Your aim should be to showcase your potential. Your audition doesn't need to be perfect, it's an opportunity to showcase how good you could become.
5: Be authentic and passionate:
Drama colleges look for students who are authentic, passionate, and committed to their craft. Show your personality and enthusiasm in your application and audition, and be prepared to talk about your ambitions and what drives you.
I don't like it when people say this as it's such a generic thing to say, but it's important to be yourself. Drama Colleges want to see who you are and what makes you unique as a performer. Don't be afraid to show your personality and enthusiasm. You're potentially going to be working together for the next few years so they want to see how much of a legend you are... so show them.
